Welcome to the Rapid Age Development July 2008: Rise of the Shells contest.

Contents

Contest Rules

This contest revolves around creating content for your Shell within Ahra Pahts, a project by Aloys (see the Ahra Pahts home page). It will also be a solo effort, but that doesn't stop you from from asking questions on the forum should you get stuck with something.

It is a friendly contest that is open to everyone of every level of Age writing, the main thing is to have a go and have fun and maybe learn a bit on the way.

Entry Types

There will be two types of entries:

  1. New shells: no work has been done on this shell prior to the contest.
  2. Existing shells: you have worked on the shell prior to the contest.

In either case, your entry will be judged on the progress made during the 3-week contest.

Note: For those of you who have an existing shell, please submit your shell as-is by 30 June to
Aloys, before the contest begins. The judges need to see the current state of your shell, in
order to judge the progress you will make during the contest.

Guidelines

Go here to sign up for an non reserved shell.

Go here to get some common questions relating to Ahra Pahts answered.

Go here to double check that you have done everything and also review the conventions that must be used.

From my personal experience, name EVERYTHING in your .blend file, objects, lights, cameras, regions, sound files, python files and SDL variables with a prefix of s### where ### is the number of your shell.

Go here if you are new to Ahra Pahts and need some guidance on how to set everything up.

For questions or comments about this contest, please respond to
the RAD2 Contest thread on the forums.

Here are some basic guidelines that you should also keep in mind, in pdf format.

Scoring

On the sign up sheet for your Alias Name and your Shell, you will find columns for the judges' scores. Each Shell will be scored for:

Content How much stuff is in it

Creativity Including originality and uniqueness

Stability How non-buggy it is

Visual Quality Textures, lighting, aesthetics and so on

Functionality Things you can touch and interact with eg a soccer ball and/or journal

Overall Summary score for enjoyment factor

The 6 letters below each judge's column in the sign-up sheet below correspond to the scoring categories listed in the same order as stated above.

After the build time is over these letters will change to actual scores from 0 (non existant or terribly broken) to 9 (absolute perfection). All scores will be whole numbers only, this is to save confusion.

There will also be about a 1 week gap between the end of build time and the results from all the judges, assuming we have loads of people entering.

Announcements and Results

All judges should finish their score sheet and send it to Grogyan by 11:50pm GMT on Tuesday 29 July.

On the 30th the winner will be declared and the score sheet below will be updated and range from at the top, the best shell, to the bottom for the lowest overall scored.

Scores will be in whole numbers and be rounded to the nearest whole number when the overall score is calculated.

There will also be a seperate page to view screen shots of the shells that were entered, before and after.

A link to that page will be added here and on the RAD2 contest topic in the Guild of Writers forum as well as the Guild of Maintainers forum.

There also be some anonymous comments from the judges. This is a similar system to gold stars that were introduced in the first contest.

Shell Development Resources

You can use any Released Version you wish of either the Alcugs or GoW-PyPrp. You can also use any tools you wish for completing your shell, including hexadecimal editing of the files.

Many of the tools can be found here to help you in varying aspects of development

You can, at your own risk, use the bleeding edge in subversion, but if you do, the plugin developers will not help you should you become stuck.

Deadlines

You have until 23:59 GMT Monday 30 June to register for this contest. It will begin Tuesday 1 July and will have an end deadline of 23:59 GMT Monday 21 July (click here for timezone conversions), 3 weeks later.

  • If your shell is not received by the end deadline, you will be disqualified.
  • If you have submitted your shell, but it causes URU to crash, you will be notified. Then you must immediately fix the problem and re-submit your shell within one hour of notification, or you will be disqualified.
  • If you wish to appeal your disqualification, post your appeal on the GoW forums, stating the reasons for your late submission. All RAD 2 judges will review the appeal, then vote whether to include your submission. The majority of the judges must vote yes for your submission to be included.

Submitting Your Shell

At the end of the contest you'll need to send Aloys and Robert the Rebuilder an email with one of the following:

  • Your shell files as an attachment in Zip form, or
  • A URL to the zip file (stored on your file server).

Please have your zip named as "Shell999.zip" as an example, just change the numbers to reflect your shell number.

The structure for files within should be as

Shell###

-> \dat . . . . . . . . containing just your shell's PRP file

-> \python. . . . . . . containing all your .py files (if you have any)

-> \SDL . . . . . . . . containing your SDL file (if you have any SDL variables)

-> \sfx . . . . . . . . containing all your .ogg sound files (if you have any)

There is no need to submit your .blend file with your submission, thats to save any problems between the builders and judges.

Ahra Pahts Downloads

Initial Version

The initial version of Ahra Pahts - containing the two pre-existing contestant shells 309 and 224 - is now available for download:

AhraPahts08D3.zip(25.6 MB)

The judges should compare the progress made during the three week period of these two shells by visiting this version, making notes and taking screenshots.

Final Version

There are actually two versions of the final RAD2 Ahra Pahts. The first version contains all the shells except for shell 232:

AhraPahts08E_no232.zip (43.5 MB)

Please download and review the other shells in this version first. Once you've made enough notes, then download this version (which has all 6 entries, including shell 232):

AhraPahts08E.zip (53.4 MB)

The reason that there are two versions is because shell 232 has an extremely high polygon count. If you go anywhere near it (including the surrounding subdistricts in the 100-numbered shells), please allow 5-10 minutes for the shell to fully load.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, if you want to read the journal in Grogyan's shell, you'll need this updated pak file Pahts.zip
